Surrey script record 501 run-chase to beat Kent in County cricket

Surrey chased down a target of 501, the second-highest in County Championship history after Middlesex beat Notts in 1925.

Dom Sibley and Ben Foakes were the architects in chief as they stitched a partnership of 207. Sibley scored 140 from 368 balls and batted 511 minutes – making it the slowest ton. Foakes made 124 as Surrey reached the target in 146.1 overs. Jamie Smith’s 77-ball 114 also laid the foundation for the chase.

Earlier, Kent had posted a first-innings total of 301. Surrey responded with just 145 in their first innings. Kent ended their second innings on 344, with Jordan Clark taking 5/79.

Surrey needed to score briskly to win, but they never looked in trouble as Sibley and Foakes batted with patience and determination.

The win was a significant boost for Surrey and now puts them in fifth place in the County Championship table, while Kent remains in fourth.

“It was a fantastic performance from the lads,” said Surrey captain Rory Burns. “We knew it would be a tough ask, but we never gave up. Dom and Ben set it up with a great partnership, and we could not have asked for more,” he added.

The Manipur challenge: Fault lines in police, state awash with weapons

In a state awash with arms and roiled by ethnic clashes for more than a month now, the latest round of killings in the area of Khamenlok, near Kuki-dominated Kangpokpi’s borders with the Meitei stronghold of Imphal East, is a stark reminder of the challenges security forces face in their attempts to restore normalcy.

The killings late Tuesday was the second incident of violence in Khamenlok in 36 hours. On Monday afternoon, when a gunfight broke out between Meitei and Kuki groups in the Khamenlok area, security forces were rushed to the area. But they could not reach in time because women and children had blocked the road. By the time the route was cleared, nine persons from the two communities had sustained gunshot injuries.

Days earlier, in Sugnu which is east of Churachandpur, a contingent of Assam Rifles found the road dug up. When AR personnel went to the local police station to complain, there was a verbal altercation. The policemen accused the paramilitary personnel of interfering in their work. The heated exchange, sources said, even had the two sides cocking their guns before they backed down.
